PBN is based on Area Navigation, or RNAV, a method of navigation that permits aircraft operation on any desired flight path within the coverage of station-referenced navigation aids or within the limits of the capability of self-contained aids, or a combination of these. RNAV is a method of navigation that permits aircraft operation on any desired flight path within the coverage of ground- or space-based navigation aids or within the limits of the capability of self-contained aids, or a combination of these. Key to achieving this is through the application of Performance-based Navigation (PBN). In parallel, the UK navigation infrastructure can also be optimised to take advantage of the lateral navigation accuracy from Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) while retaining adequate conventional ground-based navigation aids to ensure both resilience and contingency measures. These improvements will help us achieve performance targets and meet operational needs in European airspace, as well as achieving global interoperability for both civil and military operations. Performance Based Navigation In a nutshell, Performance Based Navigation (PBN) is simply saying, if you want to fly IFR en-route or perform approaches, you must be able to keep to a minimum level of navigational accuracy. The navigational accuracy required will be defined for the airspace you are flying in and for the operation you want to perform. Performance requirements are identified in navigation specifications, which also identify the choice of navigation sensors and equipment that may be used to meet the performance requirements. PBN specifications provide specific implementation guidance in order to facilitate global harmonisation. Enter Performance Based Navigation PBN specifies RNAV system performance i.e. accuracy, integrity, continuity, availability + functionality; - written up in navigation specifications This is different than the RNP concept, which stressed navigation accuracy and „stopped‟ at required performance.

Performance based navigation

Performance-based Navigation (PBN) is the most practical solution for the regulation of new navigation systems technology. PBN is based on Area Navigation, or RNAV, a method of navigation that permits aircraft operation on any desired flight path within the coverage of station-referenced navigation aids or within the limits of the capability of

Rather than looking at what it is possible to do with the on-board technology, it begins with what is need to perform the selected operation and works back from there. The PBN concept represents a shift from sensor-based to performance-based navigation. PBN routes and procedures are designed to meet a navigation specification which is defined in terms of accuracy, integrity, availability, continuity and functionality for the proposed operations in the context of a particular airspace. Personnel involved in airspace design need to understand the PBN concept Performance requirements are identified in navigation specifications, which also identify the choice of navigation sensors and equipment that may be used to meet the performance requirements.
