Argumentation theory is a multidisciplinary field drawing from communication theory, linguistics, philosophy, discourse analysis, and social psychology. Argumentation becomes concerned with investigating the nature and structure of argument as it occurs in real, natural situations. Given the frequency with which arguments occur in daily life, it is a vital branch of communication studies. Starting from the meaning of the word “argumentation” in ordinary language, a more technical definition is provided of the term argumentation as it is for research purposes used in argumentation theory. In this definition, argumentation is connected with communication, interaction, accountability, and reasonableness. Argumentation is a verbal, social, and rational activity aimed at convincing a reasonable critic of the acceptability of a standpoint by putting forward a constellation of propositions justifying or refuting the proposition expressed In presenting this overview, argumentation is consistently approached from a pragma-dialectical perspective by viewing it pragmatically as a goal-directed communicative activity and dialectically as part of a regulated critical exchange aimed at resolving a difference of opinion.
